This video show the problems caused by the world's dependence on the use of oil. Oil production causes extreme pollution where refineries are concentrated, as in central Louisiana and in New Jersey, California, Nigeria and other places. The resultant pollution causes sickness.
People in the U.S. and worldwide are addicted to oil and are unwilling to give up the comforts and conveniences and great benefits of oil use. Most of the consurmer products we own and use are made from and are distributed by using oil. Oil powers our transportation and food production. Oil provides heating for homes and businesses. The United State's dependence on foreign oil results in $50 billion dollars a year in military spending to protect oil supplies in foreign countries. The purpose of the war with Iraq was to secure Iraq as an oil source. That war resulted in the death, injury, and suffering of many people. The image of America being a positive influence worldwide has been degraded by our military and political efforts to maintain supplies of oil.
Reducing our use of oil will reduce many serious problems.
A number of methods can be used to lessen the use of oil and thereby lessen the problems. The US government subsidizes 6000 plus pound cars. That money could instead be used to increase the use of small cars, electric powered cars, and alternative fuels.
Methods to reduce oil use that are now implemented in at least two countries can serve as examples of how the US and other countries can decrease the use of oil. Germany produces renewable energy using bio diesel, wind, and solar. Sweden mandates it will be petroleim free by 2020. The Swedish government promotes renewable energy by eliminating all taxes on renewable fuel.
Biodiesel is less poluting, more eficient, and does not use foreign oil.
Las Vegas school system has 1500 buses that run on bio diesel. Fleet owners such as FedEx, the Navy, Disneyland, Mcdonald, and UPS were using bio diesel. Then Science magazine published two articles about the dangers of bio diesel fuel: global warming, deforestation, and starvation. Quickly bio diesel was largely discontinued.
But gasoline is worse than bio diesel. Gasoline is subsidized. Its true cost is higher than the cost of bio diesel. Gasoline requires more enery to produce than is in the gasoline. Production of corn ethanol fuel is also more costly than bio diesel. Oil is required to grow ethonal producing crops. Oil is used whebn precessing corn into ethanol. Pollution is a byproduct of ethanol production. A dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico is 8500 square miles. It is caused by the fertilizer used to grow corn.
Bio diesel fuel from soybeans produces more energy than is used in the production of the fuel. It has some of same problems that ethonal has: deforestation and the use of oil to produce. There are better ways to produce bio diesel. Bio diesel production could be sustainibile. There are oil producing crops that could grow on marginal soil.
The supply of oil is running out. We will eventually have to use less. Our energy needs could be met from a combination of bio fuels, wind, solar, public transit, and icreasing efficiency. Plug-in hybrid cars could reduce oil use significantly.
The film is informative, positive, and leaves you with a good feeling that you can be part of making the world better.
Everyone should watch this movie.
