Arctic Death Spiral: How It Favors Extreme, Prolonged Weather Events ‘Such As Drought, Flooding, Cold Spells And Heat Waves’
The jet stream travels west to east across the mid northern latitudes. It is a wavy path which bulges to the north and south. Analysis of the position of the the bulges indicates that a warming artic over the last decade corresponds with an increase in the bulges. This study concludes that the larger bulges contribute to the length of the extreme weather events droughts, heat waves, warm spells, and wet spells. The discussion presented is technical and it is difficult to assess. The effects seem small but if this is a trend that continues and increases, then we might be in for worse extreme weather intervals.
