Financial institutions operate through computer networks and are potentially vulnerable. The internet used by individuals and businesses could be subjected to disruption by coordinated attacks by hostile organizations or foreign nations.

Various departments of the U.S. government have responsibility to increase security of those networks. As dependence on computer networks increase, defense of computer networks becomes more important.
